Being one of New Zealand great rides, the Rimutaka Cycle Trail is a great option for a weekend getaway just right outside of Wellington. The official trail starts from Petone but we took the train to Lower Hutt and skip the first bit. In exchange we finished the ride in Eastbourne instead of finishing at the Orongorongo Station.
The first section of the trail follows the Hutt river up to Maymorn. Beyond the valley the way gets steeper as it gradually climbs into the Rimutaka range. The ride is fun though, as you get to pass through old tunnels and the views on a good day are excellent. Once you've reached the highest point, the way out to the Wairarapa is a fun easy descendent.
At Cross Creek we had to join the road until we got to Ocean Beach. Probably the most boring part of the ride but with nice views of Lake Wairarapa and Lake Ferry on the left and the Rimutakas on the right. There are several good picnic spots along the way, perfect for a lunch break.
We spent the night in Corner Creek, a campsite maintained by the DOC right in front of the beach. Not the best campsite I've been but good enough after a good day of biking. It has a covered space with a sink and a large table to enjoy your meals.
After a good night's sleep we woke up early to make our way through the Wild Coast. This was our favourite part of the ride. On a good day it reaches my level of epicness. Great views of the Tasman Sea and the South Island with the Rimutaka really close to you on the other side. Some sections are challenging and we had to walk but overall awesome experience! I'd do it again without hesitating.
